- German submarine SM UB-43 torpedoes without warning the P&O ocean liner RMS Arabia in the Mediterranean Sea 300 nautical miles east of Malta. The Arabia is en route from Sydney to Britain with 187 Australians aboard and a shipment of mail. The Australians aboard include 122 munition workers contracted to work in British factories and many nurses on their way to war hospitals. Two people die in the attack; the shipment of mail is lost.
