- The British liner Lusitania arrives at Liverpool flying a United States flag. Lusitania had departed New York on 30 January and was at sea when Germany declared British waters a war zone on 4 February. As the liner approached Ireland, Captain Daniel Dow raised the American flag in an attempt to avoid attack by German submarines.
