- Francis Bede Commins enlists. Francis is commemorated on the Centenary of WWI in Orange Honour Roll; he would be killed in action in France on 31 March 1917.
- Germany issues the Sussex pledge, agreeing to give adequate warning before sinking merchant and passenger ships. The pledge is issued following public outrage at the sinking of the British ferry SS Sussex on 24 March, resulting in the death of at least 50 civilians. The pledge is upheld until February 1917, when unrestricted submarine warfare resumes.
