- Thomas John Dixon enlists. Thomas is commemorated on the Centenary of WWI in Orange Honour Roll; he would be killed in action in France on 17 March 1917.
- 2,100 Russian troops land on the shores of the Black Sea at Atina, east of Trebizond in Turkey. They carry out a pincer attack and quickly take the town.
- Portugal seizes German vessels at Lourenco Marques (now Maputo), the capital of Mozambique
- An attempted assassination of Enver Pasha, War Minister of the Ottoman Empire, occurs in Constantinople. Enver is one-third of the triumvirate known as the “Three Pashas”, who held de facto rule over the Empire from 1913 until the end of World War I in 1918.
