- William Thomas Curnow enlists. William is commemorated on the Centenary of WWI in Orange Honour Roll; he would be killed in action in France, on 31 August 1918.
- Roads and trenches on the Somme begin to flood; the area around Gueudecourt becomes waterlogged. Commander of Fourth Army, Sir Henry Rawlinson, despairs of a further advance.
- Austrian soldiers are repulsed at Torzburg, but succeed at Predeal Pass on the Eastern Front
- The Ninth Battle of the Isonzo begins in north-eastern Italy. There are 39,000 Italian and 33,000 Austro-Hungarian casualties during the five-day battle.
