  • Great Yarmouth becomes the first British town to be attacked by Germany. A flotilla of seven German cruisers and attendant warships commanded by Admiral Franz von Hipper bombard the coastline with shells. There are no casualties.
  • The British Royal Navy’s Grand Fleet is ordered back to its designated anchorage at Scapa Flow in the Orkney Islands
  • British ships blockading the Dardanelles bombard the Turkish forts guarding the entrance to the Straits
  • British troops cross the northern frontier of German East Africa
  • Baron Sidney Costantino Sonnino is appointed Italian Foreign Minister in Antonio Salandra’s newly formed cabinet
  • Von Lettow-Vorbeck’s German colonial forces defeat the British at the Battle of Tanga, German East Africa
