- The Australian War Loan totals nearly £21,000,000. War loan programs were established by the Commonwealth and State governments to encourage Australians to support the war effort by purchasing government war bonds which were repaid with interest. A total amount of almost £250.2 million was raised by seven war loan schemes. Peace Loan campaigns were launched after the war to recoup the cost of the war and to fund soldier pensions. They operated in a similar way to the war loans; people ‘lent’ the government money in return for interest.
