- Claude Bertie West enlists. Claude is commemorated on the Centenary of WWI in Orange Honour Roll; he would die of wounds in France on 5 May 1916.
- The Germans start to besiege the Maubeuge Fortress in France. The battle lasts until the French garrison surrender on 7 September, following heavy bombardment from the aircraft and ground troops.
- The start of the Allied Great Retreat to the River Marne. Defeated French and British troops retreat from Mons to the River Marne. The retreat continues for over a month, terminating on 28 September.
