  • Conscription is introduced in Britain for men aged between 18 and 41. The Military Service Act introduced on 27 January 1916 encouraged single men aged 18 to 41 to enlist voluntarily; however on 2 March 1916 they are automatically placed into the reserves.
  • Russian forces capture Bitlis in Armenia during a raging blizzard
  • General Kuropatkin’s Russian 5th Army on the Western Front launch a campaign between Lake Drisvaty and Lake Naroch, in an effort to relieve pressure on the French at Verdun. An early thaw turns the ground to mud and slush.
