  • The Leader reports the death of Raymond Sylvester Lord, who died of wounds in France on 15 November 1916, aged 26. Personal
  • The Red Cross Society appeals for donations of fresh fruit and vegetables for the families of soldiers killed in action and those who have been invalided home. Red Cross Society – Fruit And Vegetables Wanted
  • Prime Minister Hughes presents his “Marriage by Proxy” bill to the House of Representatives, whereby soldiers serving overseas could marry women in Australia. The bill is not passed.
  • General Nivelle launches the last offensive in the Battle of Verdun to the north of Douaumont. The enemy front line is pushed back more than three kilometres; the towns of Vacherauville, Poivre Hill (342), Louvemont and Les Chambrettes are captured.
  • The Greek Government accepts the Allied ultimatum of 11 December demanding the demobilisation of the army and the liberation of Venizelists
