- Field Marshal Fredrick Sleigh Roberts, 1st Earl Roberts dies in France. A veteran of the Second Afghan War and the South African War, Roberts was one of the earliest advocates of compulsory military service. The 82 year old contracted pneumonia whilst visiting Indian troops at Saint-Omer.
