  • The Battle of Armentières begins. It lasts until 2 November.
  • A German submarine is sighted for the first time on the Southampton to Le Havre Channel crossing.
  • The exiled Belgian Government is set up at Sainte-Adresse, Le Havre in France, where it remains for the duration of the war.
