- Voluntary recruitment for the Australian Imperial Force commences. By the end of 1914, 52,561 Australian volunteers passed the strict physical and medical standards for overseas service. Despite two attempts to introduce conscription, enlistment remained voluntary for the duration of the war.
- Austria-Hungary invades Russia, creating the Eastern Front
- After evading British warships in the Mediterranean, the German battle cruiser Goeben and light crusier Breslau arrive at the entrance to the Dardanelles and request Turkish permission to enter the straits. The Turks let the German warships through to Constantinople where they are nominally handed over to the Turkish navy.
