- The German raider SMS Moewe captures the British merchant steamer SS Appam off Madeira in the Atlantic Ocean. The vessel with its crew and passengers are taken to the neutral port of Hampden Roads in Virginia. The Appam remains there until March 1917; she is returned to British ownership when the United States enters the war.
