- Wilfred Edmund Cox enlists. Wilfred is commemorated on the Centenary of WWI in Orange Honour Roll; he would be killed in action in Belgium on 22 March 1918.
- General Sir Ian Hamilton replies to Lord Kitchener describing the the potential British evacuation of Gallipoli as “unthinkable”:
“It would not be wise to reckon on getting out of Gallipoli with less loss than that of half the total force”
- British nurse, Edith Cavell is court-martialled and executed by German forces in Brussels for espionage and aiding escaped prisoners. Her execution is met with much consternation, resulting in an increased number of enlistments.
