- Walter Thomas Cornish enlists. Walter is commemorated on the Centenary of WWI in Orange Honour Roll; he would die of wounds in Belgium on 22 September 1917.
- The Leader reports that there are now 41,500 Australians at the front, 25% of whom have been wounded. Australians in Fighting Line
- Despite increased enlistments – Recruits Still Rolling In – still more recruits are needed. In an article entitled More Recruits Wanted the Leader urges:
We are writing a new page of history. Future generations cannot be allowed to read the decline of the British Empire and attribute it to us… It is far better to go out with honor than to survive with shame.
- Austro-Hungarian forces recapture the city of Lemberg from the Russians, ending the Third Battle of Lemberg. Russian troops have been pushed back to the starting point of their initial invasion of Galicia in August 1914.
